What to Know Before Buying a Real Flower Locket Necklace
Share
A real flower locket necklace is one of the most meaningful pieces of jewelry you can own. Unlike mass-produced jewelry that anyone can buy off a shelf, a locket made with real preserved flowers is a one-of-a-kind keepsake. No two pieces are ever identical because no two flowers are identical. Before you buy your first real flower locket necklace, here is what you should know about how they are made, how to choose the right one, and how to care for it so it lasts.
What Is a Real Flower Locket Necklace?
A real flower locket necklace contains an actual botanical specimen, usually a pressed or resin-preserved flower or petal, set inside a pendant. The flowers are dried and preserved using techniques like pressing, freeze-drying, or UV-cured resin casting. At Greene Is Gold, we use the pressing method: each flower is carefully pressed flat, dried over time, and hand-set inside a locket pendant. The result is a wearable piece of nature that holds its color and shape for decades.
How Are They Made?
The process starts with fresh flowers. We source botanicals both from our own studio and from customers who send us flowers from weddings, funerals, gardens, or other meaningful events. Each flower is pressed using weighted boards for several weeks until fully dry. Once dry, the petals or whole blooms are trimmed to fit the locket casing and hand-set under a clear glass or resin cover. Every step is done by hand in our NYC studio.
Because flowers vary in thickness, color, and shape, no two lockets come out exactly the same. That is part of what makes each one unique. You are not buying a manufactured product. You are buying a piece made specifically for you.
How to Choose the Right Real Flower Locket
There are a few things to consider before buying:
Flower type. Some flowers press beautifully and hold their color for years. Pansies, larkspur, and small wildflowers tend to press flat and retain detail well. Roses and thick-petaled flowers are more challenging because of their water content, though individual petals from roses press well.
Locket size. Larger lockets can accommodate whole small flowers or several petals arranged together. Smaller lockets showcase a single petal or a tiny bloom. Think about the scale of what you want to wear and whether you want the flower to be the focal point or a subtle detail.
Custom vs. ready-made. At Greene Is Gold, we offer both. Ready-made lockets ship immediately and feature flowers we have already pressed and set. Custom orders let you send in your own flowers, which we then press and set into a locket for you. Custom orders are popular for wedding bouquet flowers, flowers from a loved one's garden, or memorial pieces.
Metal type. Our lockets are available in sterling silver, gold-filled, and gold vermeil. Consider what metal you or the recipient typically wears. If you are giving one as a gift, sterling silver is generally the most versatile choice.
What to Expect in Terms of Longevity
With proper care, a real flower locket necklace can last for decades. The main threats to pressed flower jewelry are moisture, prolonged UV light exposure, and physical pressure that can crack the resin or glass. The flowers themselves, once fully dried and sealed, are stable. You should not swim, shower, or apply perfume while wearing your locket. Store it in a jewelry box or pouch away from direct sunlight when not in use.
We have customers who have worn their Greene Is Gold lockets daily for several years and the flowers still look exactly as they did on the day they received them.
Is a Real Flower Locket Right for You?
If you want something mass-produced, perfectly uniform, and inexpensive, a real flower locket is probably not the right fit. But if you want a piece of jewelry that feels personal, carries meaning, and is genuinely one of a kind, it is hard to find anything better.
Every locket we make is a small preserved moment. Whether it holds a flower from your wedding bouquet, your grandmother's garden, or simply a bloom you loved, it becomes something you will want to keep for a long time.
